I based this painting off my late uncle, Master Man Hee Kim’s art.

He dedicated most of his life salvaging and finding remnants of Korean art that were mostly destroyed and burnt during the Japanese occupation in South Korea and brought them back to life by recreating them. He had been arrested several times under the suspicion of the government thinking he was a spy which I found out through a news article that was written about him after he had passed away. (Would’ve been way more interesting if I had heard firsthand accounts from him directly) He has since been recognised as a cultural figure in restoring and recreating Korean folk art, “Minhwa” and was granted the title Master.

I’ve been fortunate enough to have one of his original scroll paintings and a couple of his books (which 2 year old me thought was fun to scribble in hahaha) passed onto me from my dad. I’ve always found them interesting, but finding out who my uncle was and what he did inspires me soo so much ! Gonna collect em all ! lol hahaha
